This fun and intensive class will guide you through drawing a most beloved subject – trees. The complex organic forms inherent in trees are a wonderful opportunity to gain a sensitivity to the dynamic angles and volumes of nature, as well as learning to see holistically.

This course will focus on:

- Selecting your subject and composition – searching for what speaks to you in the surrounding scene

- Measuring – accurately observing the organized chaos of the natural world, and conveying it through drawing without stiffening up the angles and forms.

- making sense of complex information and simplifying details (such as leaves) into large masses

- Blocking in shadows - tackling the changeable nature of light and shadow when working outdoors

- Texture – conveying texture through suggestion.

- Conceiving of the big idea – establishing the overall light and shadow relationship of the drawing.

This class will consist of a lecture and demonstration, after which the students will select a scene with a tree/s and create a drawing. I will provide individual guidance and input on everyone's work throughout the class. All you need for the class are graphite pencils, erasers, and a sketchbook. This class is perfect for complete beginners, or those who want to significantly improve their drawing skills.
