This workshop will guide you through approaching and drawing fabric - a classical and recurrent subject matter in art. While many may find drawing fabric to be a challenge due to its apparent complexity, in this class we will learn how to simplify the observed forms, capture the big idea, and appreciate the beauty of the volumetric abstraction inherent in the subject.
The course will focus on:
- Simplifying complex information – clearly separating the light families from the dark families in order to create a clear relationship of light to dark areas through squinting and thinking holistically.
- Underlying volumes - Recognizing how the forms around which the fabric is draped cause the fabric to move the way it does, and how that affects light and shadow.
- Shadow transitions – understanding the nature of the transitions between light, shadow, and reflected light, and how those differ based on the various contexts and fabrics used.
- Markmaking- learning to use both pencils and kneaded eraser to create convincing volume and texture.
This class consists of a lecture and demonstration, after which the participants will draw from a still life of various fabrics. Anya will provide individual guidance and input on everyone's work throughout the class. All you need are graphite pencils, erasers, and a sketchbook. This class is perfect for complete beginners, or those who want to significantly improve their drawing skills.
