Introductory Techniques in Drawing
Date: Sat, January 17th, 2025 12-3 pm
Spots: min 3, max 10
Location: my studio in Summit, NJ
$50
Description:
A 3 hour intensive crash course that will introduce you to the basic techniques that will help you observe 3D reality, and conceive of it on a flat plane, so that you can draw what you see.
You will learn how to:
Measure angles that recede in space - so you can draw them accurately
Measure relationship angles - to construct a proportional map of the observed world
Measuring distances - to find how various lengths relate to each other
Triangulation - to establish relationships between points
Envelop method - which ensures that you place the proportions of large forms before breaking them down into smaller ones.
This class will be quite intensive, and will consist of lecture/demonstration, exercises, and application of the material by drawing a simple still life, during which I will check on everyone’s work and provide guidance. You will need just pencils and a (preferably large) sketchbook.
Both classes are perfect for:
complete beginners
students who took a few classes or have been painting/drawing on their own
artists with existing experience that feel that they could improve their skills in these areas
artists who have been working in other fields of art and are interested in expanding their practice
Color Mixing (paint – oils or acrylics)
Date: Sat, January 24, 2025 12-3 pm
Spots: min 3, max 10
Location: my studio in Summit, NJ
$50
Description:
A 3 hour intensive crash course in color mixing, in which I will guide you through a simple and comprehensive approach to mixing colors for painting.
You will learn how to:
mix almost any secondary, tertiary, or neutral color you need out of just three primaries.
no longer feel overwhelmed by color
be in control of your palette
develop a sensitivity to subtle color variation, including distinguishing the presence of chroma and mixing it correctly in broth saturated and neutral colors.
Learn the relevant terminology
We will start with a short but engaging lecture on the physics, physiology, and psychology of color to gain an understanding on how color is perceived, and why the color wheel looks the way it does. I will then do an extensive in-depth color mixing demonstration, after which the students will do their own guided exercise. I will also have suggestions of projects you can do as a homework to master the concepts on your own after the course. There will not be any painting in this class, only lots and lots of mixing. I recommend using oils as they allow longer mixing time, but you can use acrylics as well. You will need only 3 colors and white.
